Cherry Creek Time Trial - Race #7 - Series Final

Race #7 - The last of the cherry creek time trial series: Today was another beautiful day to ride. Things started off a little hectic for me even before the race. I didn't get off work until late, so I had to ride at break-neck speed from my house to the start line. I barely made it. The race started with a nice headwind and I was only able to maintain about 20-21 mph on the way out. For once the wind did not change directions, so I was able to make about 29-30 mph the last few miles. Came in with at time of 26:44 which wasn't my best or my worst time, but came in 37th overall - my worst placement of the series (let's see, what kind of excuses can I come up with....I donated blood last week, didn't have a clean shaving so probably added drag, tires may not have been properly inflated, or I just didn't go hard enough?.....Okay so maybe excuses really don't mean anything. I guess the motto should be RACE HARD, you will have good days and great days....But there is no such thing as a bad day on the bike!).
Dugan, who did some secret underwater ninja training while in Italy, came in with a great time of 26:23 and 31st place.
I was unable to finish in the top 20 the entire series, so I did not score any points....But I did have a lot of fun and will pencil in this series again for next season.
My stats for the day:
Temp: 80 degrees with sun and wind
Altitude: 5410
Lap Time: 26min 44sec

Max Speed: 34 mph

Cherry Creek Time Trial - Race #6

A nice day at the Cherry Creek Reservoir. It was warm with LESS WIND than usual, so it made for a more enjoyable race. It looked like a big storm was going to roll in, but it never did....at least not during my race.
Finished with my best time of the year; 26min13sec.....still looking for that elusive sub-26min time. Too bad everyone else finished with their best time as well (winner came in at 22 min 52 sec). So I still finished 30th.....man now I am thinking that my 21st place in the first race was pretty darn good. Too bad you have to place in the top 20 to get any points. I guess it is time to invest in some aerobars or a full TT rig if I actually want to be competitive in this series.

Here are my stats for the day:
Temp: 73 degrees with clouds and light wind
Altitude: 5410
Lap Time: 26min 13sec
Distance: 10.5 miles
Avg Speed: 23.6 mph
Max Speed: 31.2 mph
Cadence Avg: 82 rpm
Cadence Max: 101 rpm
Avg Min/mile: 2.32
HR Max: 192 bpm
HR Avg: 183 bpm

Cherry Creek Time Trial - Race #5

The word of the day was WIND. The race started fast with a nice tail wind. I actually spun out my 53-12 combination and maintained 32+mph for the first several minutes. Unfortunately, the fun of the speed on the way out meant that it was going to be a painful return to the finish line. I was only able to maintain about 19mph over the last 3 miles and came in with a +27 minute time again.
Here are the stats of the day....finished 31st again, arrrrgh:
Temp: 60 degrees with clouds and wind
Altitude: 5368
Lap Time: 27min 17sec
Distance: 10.5 miles
Avg Speed: 22.6 mph
Max Speed: 35.9 mph
Cadence Avg: 78 rpm
Cadence Max: 109 rpm
Avg Min/mile: 2.39
HR Max: 191 bpm
HR Avg: 182 bpm

Rabbit Mountain Team Time Trial - No Podium, but BAT Points

This was a great event and a ton of fun. 3 of my teamates and myself made up a team of 4 to compete in the Rabbit Mountain Team Time Trial on Sunday. This was an 11 km time trial the 180 meters of climbing, with the last 500 meters being a 13% climb to the finish line. The team consisted of Jeremy Gebben, Andrei Novac, Paul Bauersfeld, and myself. Our very first team practice occured on race day about an hour prior to the race. We did not have time trial rigs, aerodynamic helmets, or other fancy gear.....this was strictly a stock gear race. We worked on riding as a team in arodynamic formats and regrouping on climbs, etc. We determined that Jeremy and Paul were the best at blocking the wind since they are both over 6ft tall and wider bodied tan Andrei and I. The race started pretty mellow with all of us in line trying to get positioned. We slowly increased our speed and maintained speeds between 22-26 mph during the first 5k of false flat into a strong headwind. We made the turn and quickly regrouped on the short climb without losing much speed. Over the next 2km we caught a little crosswind that allowed us to maintain decent speed throughout the small incline. At this time we were all 4 making solid pulls for about 15-30 seconds each. As we hit the steeper grade with about 2km to go, things got much harder and Paul lost contact with our group. Paul had given us 110%, but now it was up to Andrei, Jeremy, and I to finish. I felt pretty confident in how we were doing since we could see (and were quicly catching) two teams that started 1 and 2 minutes ahead of us. We made the turn after the parking lot and Andrei gave us a strong surge of energy, and I jumped on his wheel as he pulled us to the next turn. We could finally see the finish line, but we were all hurting (I think I was hurting the most). I had not been up the final climb before, and I could see that it was steep so I started to settle in to prepare to spin up the hill. Little did I know that this was not an option....Jeremy came up behind me and gave me a little push on the back and said "lets go Ty". So we all three stood up and started hammering as hard as we could up the hill. We were in a side by side formation with each of us matching and attempting to increase each other's pace. We flew past the Echelon Team that had started two minutes ahead of us and caught the SEAR team that started 1 minute ahead of us. When we crossed the finish line I think we all felt confident that we had given it 100% (my HR was 198 bpm at the finish line), and thought our chances of finishing in the top half of the teams were good. We quickly caught our breath and headed back down the hill to meet and congratulate Paul and then head back to town. It turns out we finished 5th out of 11....we missed 4th place by 0.05 seconds...if only Andrei and I had shaved our legs and face I think we would have saved those precious 0.05 seconds with improved aerodynamics :) Here are the final results.

Cherry Creek Time Trial #4

A bad day for me at Cherry Creek. The race started poorly for me from the start. About 5 seconds into my race my left foot came unclipped from the pedal and I almost took a header into the pavement infront of all the spectators. And of course I lost time as I tried to get re-clipped into my pedals and get back into rythm. It looked cold and rainy when I left the house, so I road to the course with my rain jacket, long sleeve jersey, and knee warmers. Turned out it was way to much clothing and I was so hot during the race, I thought I might catch fire. I Cracked on the back stretch into the wind and got passed for the first time this year......

Here are the stats of the day....finished 31st, arrrrgh:

Temp: 52 degrees with rain/clouds/sun
Altitude: 5461
Lap Time: 27min 28sec

Max Speed: 31 mph
